Afro-Mexican music, dance and coastal traditions had a dedicated stage in Oaxaca this week. Mexico News Daily reports that twelve delegations participated in the state’s first Afro Guelaguetza on October 19 in Chacahua Isla.
Known as La Rejunjuneada, the celebration coincided with Oaxaca’s Afro-Mexican People’s Day. A procession and performances highlighted traditions from communities of the Costa Chica, the coastal region shared by Oaxaca and Guerrero.
The program included the Fandango de Varitas, the Turtle Dance and interpretations of the Dance of the Devils. The report also notes the participation of Enid Azucena Torres Agustiniano, the first Afro-Mexican woman selected as the main Guelaguetza’s cultural ambassador.
The event offers a cultural story about visibility and the many histories within Mexican identity, placing Afro-Mexican communities and their living traditions at the center.
