Jacob Camenker from USA Today writes about Cuban-Dominican comedian Marcello Hernandez becoming the first Latino to host the ESPYs in more than 25 years, delivering a fearless opening monologue filled with sports jokes, cultural pride and Miami energy.

Marcello Hernández took center stage at the 2026 ESPY Awards and made history while doing it.

“This is an American dream,” Hernández told the star-studded audience. But the night represented much more than comedy. Hernández proudly highlighted his Cuban and Dominican roots and recognized the contributions of immigrant athletes. His presence on one of sports’ biggest stages marked another milestone for Latino representation in mainstream American entertainment.

The comedian arrived at the ceremony accompanied by members of his family, whose sacrifices and cultural influence have remained central to his comedy. Hernández has frequently drawn inspiration from his Cuban mother, Dominican father and upbringing in Miami.

His historic ESPYs appearance follows another major career milestone: the release of his debut Netflix comedy special, American Boy, which explores Latino family life, immigrant experiences and the traditions that shaped him.

At the 2026 ESPYs, he did not simply host the show—he made sure Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the broader Latino community were represented onstage with him.
