A reel shared by Cuban Mic draws attention to Cuban creator Anna Sofía Benítez Silvente, known as Anna Bensi, and the consequences she and her mother have faced after documenting a state official’s visit.
In its October 6 report, the Observatorio Cubano de Libertad de Expresión of ICLEP reported that Bensi and her mother, Caridad Silvente, received two-year restricted-liberty sentences on October 1 after recording and publishing a video of an officer delivering a State Security summons at their home.
The reported sentence restricts movement and requires compliance with court supervision; it should not be confused with a two-year prison term.
ICLEP condemned the case as retaliation against public expression and called for the sentence to be overturned. The case highlights the risks faced by Cubans who use social media to document official conduct and criticize those in power.
