Contemporary Latino painting is taking center stage at the Des Moines Art Center. Let Us Gather in a Flourishing Way: Contemporary Latinx Painting opened October 24 and runs through January 24, 2027, in the Anna K. Meredith Gallery.

The exhibition brings together 58 artists whose work explores identity and expands the possibilities of painting, including experiments with unconventional materials. Its title comes from a poem by former U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera.

Organized by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum and curated by Dr. Andrea Alvarez, the traveling exhibition’s Des Moines presentation is organized by Senior Curator Laura Burkhalter.

For audiences interested in Latino creativity, the show offers a chance to encounter many distinct artistic voices in one place, rather than expecting a single style or story to represent an entire community.
