The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has announced Carmen Talavera as the inaugural recipient of the new Dunia Elvir Scholarship, an initiative supporting the next generation of Latino journalists.

Talavera is a student-athlete at Emerson College in Boston majoring in sports communication. She hopes to build a career in strategic communications and storytelling within professional sports. She was recognized July 25 during the NAHJ Hall of Fame Dinner at the organization’s 2026 Conference & Expo in New Orleans.

Established by NAHJ President and Telemundo 52 anchor Dunia Elvir, the scholarship will award $5,000 annually for five years—a $25,000 commitment to emerging journalists. Elvir’s career has earned numerous honors, including 18 Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards.

Talavera’s selection celebrates academic ambition, representation and the growing influence of Latina voices in sports media.
